Lecture: Week 2

Today is a lucky day. Dr Redman kindly offered us some nice jelly belly in the lecture. However, just as we put the jelly belly in our mouth, he yelled: “Stop!” and made us hand the jelly belly back. He gave us a sly smile as he looked at our candy-thirst face, “You are fairly entitled to it? Not necessarily the story. [Web] News…same deal! Web news can’t be free forever…even though we had come to a sense of entitlement.” In the light of this issue, Dr Redman asked how does web news from ‘entitled’ become ‘payable’ as he guided us through the how journalism comes to this stage: the progression of new media, new news and the current challenge that online news is facing.

l  Old Media vs. New Media

Dr. Redman described that old media is developed in the late 19th century-first half 20th century, they are the media platform that derived from the industrial paradigm; media as such includes newspaper, magazines, TV and radio. These devices are all about mass communication, whereas a large group of people are targeted altogether, even though they marketed different target audience. Nonetheless, recounting to the research that I done for the media diary, it is found that the false side of such system is that as the body of audience is wide and large, it is harder for the marketing of the programs to suit the distinct interests among the audiences precisely.
Also, as the production of the context that is to be displayed and the operation of the interactive channels between the producer and its audience are entirely dependent on the media institutions; thus, the audience can only engage in it, the audience can only be passive media engagers in such context. An example of this is that we cannot make the morning news to be on TV at night, and we cannot ensure there is always call-in programs or that the media institutions will take the comment we send them into account.
On the other hand, new media is about the digital contents online that can be created, stored or retrieved by the internet users 24/7. People have the direct control of the display and creation of the context and the many-to-many interactive paradigm that enhances participatory culture of high interactions between producer and consumers and produsage are enabled. Therefore, in comparison with the old media, audience can have more power over the media, and as it is relatively more convenient, fast and accessible, people tend to use it for news communication increasingly often alongside with the progression of web iteration.

l  Web Iteration

Dr Redman gave us the brief history of web iteration as he addresses the progression of the World Wide Web which eventually lead to the evolutionary ‘new news’.

turbointernet.com

Web 1.0-Information Web
Focus: companies
Context:
·         Brochure ware-repurposing for the web. It is for companies to post their information on the web for others to access.
·         Surrounds with ads, mainly in a banner form
·         An extension of offline media (print, broadcasting) as it is merely transforming the context in old media to a digital platform.

Web 2.0-Social Web
Focus: social groups
Context:
·         Produsage-the production of digital context can be entirely or highly be involved by general internet users. A collaborative online environment is formed and strict producer/consumer dichotomy no longer necessarily applied. Thus, the interactivity is high between the produsers and a relatively efficient social networking is formed.

Web 3.0-Semantic Web
Focus: individuals
Context:
·         The internet is added with machine-readable meaning to the packet of information via meta tag. It is a special HTML tage that provides information about web pages (creator, update time, content, key words etc.); it is often built in search engine to allow the multi-layer question to be readable by the machine. Subsequently, the information/ ad that are individually related to the user can be tracked by the mechanic system and delivered to the users directly. Its usage is largely associated with internet enabled mobiles as it can keep track on the users at anywhere anytime.

« Web 3.0 is the NOW for News
As we can observe, as the focus of the web is continues to narrow down till the current stage of Web 3.0 whereas the focus can merely be on individuals, the way that we engage with “new news” is changed.

blog.radvision.com

New News within Semantics Web = Hyperlocalisation
“It got very specific stuff for you as an individual. What does it mean for news? Hyperlocalisation,” said Dr. Redman. He identifies that hyperlocalisation is for the web system being able to track the users down to the exact location of where we are.
He addresses that hyperlocalisation in terms of news means that we can tailor the type and amount of the web news that we received to be localized and suits our own interests. In addition, such specific content delivery comes with a few up and down sides.

Plus:
·         News my way
We can eliminate out the unwanted news to be displayed, and thus increases the efficiency of getting the news we want straight away.
·         Advertising specific
The advertising on internet can target its addressee precisely because semantics web can evaluate the the identity, location and interests of the user.

Minus:
·         Ignorance and lack of ‘general knowledge’
When we are being selective about the news we get, our view and general knowledge is limited and narrowed. Less knowledge of the world means fewer assets for us to apply when we are making judgment. For example, if I only care about the hyperlocal news happens in Brisbane, and then I decided to go to China for travel with no knowledge of that there is big issue in food safety over there (they got poisoned milk), I might be unaware of such concern and drink their milk and got myself sick.

l  New News

New news is mainly about online news that appears on the internet, or can be received via new communication devices such as ipad, iphone etc. Its outlet is different from the traditional way, for instance, Brisbane Time is a purely online-based news company and they offers app for news on iphone. New news had made it super convenient for its audience by offering a diversity access for news. However, as most online news is offered ‘free’ to the audience, significant crisis is happening in the journalism industry.

Challenges…

Entitlement = The Death of Journalism!?
Dr. Redman pointed out that the problem with web news is that as it has been on the internet for free for a long time, people now feel like that they have an ‘entitlement’ to own it free and is reluctant about paying for newspaper or for the web news to become payable. Also, the emergent of EBay make the main source of the money for newspaper, the advertisings on classifiers, to be used less. As a result, the money resource for newspaper is declining and the web news is offered for free to the audience, the journalism industry is facing serious financial issue.
“The big problem is, will people pay for things that they believe they are entitled to?” Dr. Redman asked. Nonetheless, it seems like Rupert Murduch had come up with a solution for this crisis.

Payway = Solutions?
Rupert Murduch comes up with the idea of establishing ‘’paywall”; it is a subscription model of web news, whereas only the people who pay for the membership of the news webpage would be enabled to read the full context of it while general public’s access to those news would be blocked. At the moment, The Australians and the Herald Sun had all gone behind the paywall.
Nonetheless, as people are not prepared to pay for online news Rupert Murduch come up with a new business of attracting people to pay for news by offering its member to get something ‘extra’ from it. For example, Murduch’s Time news website offers its members various discount docket for restaurant, tickets etc.

The Global Mail
Global Mail, as a new model of journalism has also come up to offer a new strategy for industry. It claims to be intending to be less about getting profit from advertising, but by offering quality journalism to attract audience. Nonetheless, whether it is working or not is yet to be seen.

News can’t be free forever, cause if news is free forever, who is happy to leave university and work for nothing for their rest of life making news?” asked Dr. Redman.

And as we in the lecture are all potential future journalists, there is no need for any further explanation, because we all know the answer by heart. Even though we all enjoy free news like others, it is an indubitable fact that funding is crucial for journalism industry if any production of news is to continue.
